Understanding the Definition of Marketing

Part 2: Understanding the Definition of Marketing Comments from Kris

Make sure that your website is search engine optimized to be easily found:
good keywords that have high demand and low supply (wordtracker used to give free trials for keyword searches; google keywords are also a good source of high demand/low supply keywords).

In addition to good keywords, you need to use the file name of the page (it needs to be a good keyword name) in the page title, in the meta description, in the first paragraph on the page, and in at least one headline on the page (2 headlines if it makes sense).

Write at least 500 words for each website page - you need to have some depth. Lots of people focus on how the website looks but google (who represents 80% of all searches worldwide) doesn't give 'points' for looks - it's all about content.

Write some press releases (include your website url) and send them to the local papers - you want them to pick up the story - they may even come out to interview you.

Write short press releases (include your website url) for radio - send them to local radio stations - they may even come out to interview you.

Check out the local business networks in your area - many for-profit business networks provide 'free' speaking introductions of non-profit organisations - see if you can develop your profile with them.

Talk to other non-profits that do NOT compete with yours - find out how they have built their organisation - they often have transferable knowledge.

Phew. This is like a 'crash course' in how to build a website and a website marketing strategy - which is just one of the tactics you could use for your marketing mix promotion program.

There is a lot of work for you to do! Begin by understanding the definition of marketing, building a marketing plan, then move forward. This is really only a start of a lot of hard work ahead (but the rewards could be great)!

Best of luck with your organization.

Understanding the Definition of Marketing
by: Kris

Understanding the definition of marketing is the first step; before you can work on your marketing mix promotion program. Marketing is the foundation of your sales efforts - it needs to be developed in tandem with your products and services.

Typically, you need to develop a marketing plan. However a short form of that is to focus on building a measurable (regarding results) action plan:

Do you have a website? If you don't have a website the social networking sites will not be useful to you. If you do have a website: sign up for Facebook and create a fan page - this is not for personal use it is for business use; sign up for LinkedIn (a professional networking site and set up a group); set up your Twitter account (maybe you've already done this) and follow people you would want to connect with (that is, follow them first - the protocol is that they will usually follow you back - that's how you build a following).

Put aside about one hour to 3 hours a week to post to these three online social networks: talk about what your organisation does, who it does it for, why it's important, etc. (traditional who, what, where, when, why and how).

Check out hootsuite or tweetdeck - both of those sites will help you schedule your messages for future delivery and also upload website changes (if you connect your site to your social network) - both have free services you can use (they charge for advanced services but you don't need those yet).

If you have a website, have you registered with google places (hopefully it's available in Ireland)? If you register your site with google places, people looking for local businesses online will find you more easily.

Make sure your website is registered with google webmaster tools and google analytics (you need to put the analytics code on each page of your site).

The google webmaster tools will tell you if there are any site-wide problems and the analytics will give you traffic stats and more.

(End of part 1 - Understanding the Definition of Marketing - this response carries over to 2 pages)

Best of luck,

Kris
